What is Supported Independent Living?
At the heart of the NDIS philosophy lies the principle of choice and control. This empowers individuals to have a significant voice in the support they receive and the goals they aspire to achieve. SIL NDIS homes are designed to put this principle into action, enabling people to take charge of their living situations and support services, ultimately helping them to create the life they truly desire.
What is Supported Independent Living?
Our experienced matchmakers carefully pair participants to ensure housemates share similar needs, goals, and aspirations. This fosters meaningful connections, combats feelings of isolation, and promotes overall well-being, a cornerstone of NDIS-supported independent living.
We provide tailored support that addresses the unique needs of each individual. Our SIL accommodation and SIL providers empower our users to live independently, manage their mental health, and actively engage in daily activities.
Accommodation Options within Astute Living Care in the Illawarra/Sydney Region
What accommodation options do we offer? You’ll see many acronyms being used like SIL, ILO, PRO, STA or MTA -but what do they mean?
SIL: Supported Independent Living:
SIL funding are offered to participants that require 24/7 care. At most SIL homes staff are present at all hours – some homes will have staff on awake shifts meaning they’re awake overnight to support the participants or sleepover shift meaning the staff have their own room and won’t be awake to assist however if there is an emergency they’re on hand.
In a SIL home, the role of the staff is to support the participants – these can include assistance with their daily routine, attending appointments, cooking together & improving life skills.
All participants that live in SIL with pay board & living expenses – this will include rent, bills (electricity, water, internet etc) & food. No included is personal shopping: clothes, personal care items, medication etc.
ILO: Independent Living Options:
ILO is a type of funding for participants that want to explore different ways to live with a friend, a partner, or on their own, while getting all the formal and informal supports you need without the need for 24/7 support. ILO doesn’t pay for your house or dwelling itself but gives you the freedom to live the way you choose.
STA: Short Term Accommodation:
STA replaces what used to be called respite services. STA is a funding model for participants that require a short stay away from their home. This gives the participant the chance to try new things, make friends and learn skills. It also gives their carers a short break from their informal support role.
MTA: Medium Term Accommodation:
MTA can help participants who need a place to live whilst they’re waiting for a confirmed long-term accommodation. MTA funding is a one-off funding option, for stays of up to three months (90 days), or six months (180 days), for those being discharged from hospital. MTA doesn’t include any formal support; it is only for the housing component.
Private Rental Options:
A Private Rental Options are for Participants that want choice & control over where they will but need assistance to privately rent a dwelling for themselves. These participants may not have the informal support around them to assist with ILO but also don’t want to live in SIL. We will support you to find a rental property, help setup all utilities, assist you with your daily supports in & out of the community. This option is customisable & offered only at Astute Living Care.
